Fabrique des Lumières Amsterdam

Fabrique des Lumières is located in Amsterdam's Westergasfabriek. This was once a coal factory built to light the surrounding streets. Culturespaces wants to give this location a new lease of life by turning it into a large digital art centre.

In the 1980s, they started coming up with the new plans for this site. The intention was to redevelop the site into a city park. In 1981, the municipality gave the green light to these plans. In 1989, the 22 original industrial buildings were given national monument status. A number of buildings were renovated including the gashouder.

The Westergasfabriek project office was established in 1990, and in 1993 the site was set up for cultural and recreational activities. The site was designed by an American landscape architect. The park was actually intended for temporary cultural events, but in 2003 it was opened as a permanent cultural centre.

In 2018, Duncan Stutterheim bought all the industrial buildings to ensure Westerpark was transformed into a cultural village for all Amsterdam residents. With this, Fabrique des Lumières opened its doors to the public in 2022. This was done with the opening exhibitions ‘Klimt, Gold and Colourful’ and ‘Hundertwasser’. It is an immersive, sensual, audiovisual total experience. It is an experience that revolves around art and is designed to excite, touch and overwhelm people.

At Fabrique des Lumières, art is brought to life. Various artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Salvador Dalí are given a stage here. It is not just seeing, but also experiencing. By digitising the work and presenting it in a new way, it enters through all the senses. Fabrique des Lumières is different, innovative and a stunning experience for everyone.
