Located in the heart of Amsterdam, Rokin is an iconic street connecting Dam Square with Muntplein. Part of the former course of the Amstel river, this lively and historic piece of Amsterdam combines a rich history with modern urban dynamism. Today, Rokin is a popular destination with a mix of culture, shopping, restaurants and impressive architecture.
The name Rokin has an interesting historical background dating back to the year 1559. At the time, the area was referred to as ‘Ruck-in’, a name that referred to the quay that had been constructed shortly before on the west side of the then Amstel River. To make room for this new quay, the waterfront properties had to literally ‘move in’, or move backwards. Although this quay was constructed in the 16th century, the water was not named ‘Rokin’ until the 17th century. Since then, the Rokin has become one of Amsterdam's most famous streets.
Today, the Rokin is an attractive destination for tourists and local Amsterdam residents alike. Thanks to its central location, the street offers a diverse experience. From cultural sights to trendy shops and atmospheric catering establishments. Rokin is home to several well-known shops and department stores. You will find international fashion brands, luxury boutiques and specialized shops. For true shopaholics, the Rokin is an excellent place to spend your afternoon.
The Rokin also has a cultural side with sights and historical sites worth visiting. The Allard Pierson Museum, affiliated with the University of Amsterdam, offers a fascinating collection of ancient art and archaeology. In addition, the National Bank of the Netherlands is a monumental building with impressive architecture that graces an important part of the street. You can also enjoy numerous monumental buildings with special architecture dating back to the Golden Age while strolling along the Rokin.
If you love a good bite to eat and drink, the Rokin is the place to be. From cosy cafés and lunchrooms to upscale restaurants and trendy cocktail bars, there is something for everyone. Rokin is the perfect place to take a break during a busy day in the city. A number of atmospheric terraces offer views of the canals and the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam.
