Originally, Blaak was a waterway that connected to the Meuse. In the 19th century, Blaak was filled in and the area developed into an important business centre. During World War II, much of Rotterdam was destroyed by bombing. So was a part of Blaak. In the years that followed, the area underwent a huge transformation with modern buildings, new infrastructure and iconic architecture. Today, Blaak is an important commercial and cultural centre with a mix of historical elements and innovative designs defining Rotterdam's skyline.
There are several things to see and do around Blaak. The Market Hall is one of Rotterdam's most iconic buildings. The impressive horseshoe-shaped building houses an indoor market with dozens of stalls, restaurants and shops. Here you can sample the flavors of the world from fresh fish and exotic fruit to local delicacies such as syrup waffles and cheese. In addition, Piet Blom's Cube Houses are a real eye-catcher. The yellow, leaning cubes atop a pedestrian bridge attract thousands of visitors every year. If you would like to see what these houses look like inside, you can take a look at the Kijk-Kubus. Another striking building worth visiting is the Blaak train and metro station. It has a futuristic design with a large glass dome. This station connects Blaak with the rest of Rotterdam and the surrounding cities. Besides extraordinary architecture, Blaak also has historical beauty. Within walking distance of Blaak is the historic Old Harbour. This is an attractive area with terraces, restaurants and historic ships. It is also home to the White House, the first European skyscraper built in 1898. The latest architectural masterpiece is the Central Library Rotterdam, located next to the Market Hall. It consists of a striking yellow tube structure and is one of the largest libraries in the Netherlands. It is a wonderful place to unwind.
